San Diego Chargers
The San Diego Chargers released future-hall-of-fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson after nine productive years with the team. They also saw NT Jamal Williams and CB Antonio Cromartie leave the team. The Chargers have yet to replace any of these players and will use the Draft to do so.
This draft is loaded with talented running backs, so expect them to use their first round selection (28th overall) on a running back. Their other pressing needs are at NT and CB, where they will look to add depth following the departure of key players in these positions.
With the 28th overall pick, the Chargers will likely select Ryan Matthews out of Fresno State. The Chargers have speedy scatback Darren Sproles, and the bruising running style of Matthews will be a nice compliment.
The Chargers have an early second round selection thanks to a trade with Seattle (40th overall). This is where they will likely look for a NT to replace Williams. Alabama’s Terrence Cody would be a steal if he is still around, as some project him to be a first rounder. If Cody is off the board, they will Cam Thomas (North Carolina) or Tyson Alualu (California).
San Diego’s next pick comes in the third round (91st overall). They lack depth at cornerback behind projected starters Quentin Jammer and Antoine Carson. Expect them to add another cornerback, such as South Florida’s Jerome Murphy or Fresno State’s A.J. Jefferson when they make their third round selection.
