Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs have been aggressive in free agency, adding quarterback Matt Cassel last year and running back Thomas Jones this year. Jones, together with current Chief Jamaal Charles, provide a formidable one-two punch at running back. However, their success depends on whether the Chiefs can improve their offensive line in the draft – an offensive line that was one of the league’s worst in 2009.
Kansas City will likely use their first round pick (fifth overall) on a offensive linemen. They own two picks in round 2 (36th and 50th overall) that are predicted to be used on defensive players who will help bolster an anemic Chiefs defense that allowed the third most total yards in the NFL last season.
While many media outlets were reporting Eric Berry (S, Tennessee) would be the Chiefs first round selection (5th overall pick), it was recently reported that Kansas City is unlikely to do so. Instead, expect to see them take OT Bryan Bulaga (Iowa) who will evolve into a blindside protector of Matt Cassel. Cassel, signed to a $63 million contract, was sacked 42 times last year, and the Chiefs need offensive linemen who can protect the expensive investment.
With the first of their two second round picks (36th overall), Kansas City may select Sergio Kindle (OLB/DE, Texas). The Chiefs need all the help they can get when it comes to rushing the passer (22 sacks all of last year), and Kindle should fit in nicely to their defense.
With their second pick in round 2 (50th overall), Kansas City will seek to add another defensive weapon in Linval Joseph (NT, East Carolina). The Chiefs are in desperate need of a powerful middle presence in their 3-4 defense, and Joseph is the last of the second-tier of nose tackles in his class.
