New England Patriots Playoff, Super Bowl History

As the 2011 NFL playoffs approach it is a great time to look back at the playoff history of teams in the playoffs. One of the teams with the richest playoff histories of all of the teams in the playoffs this year is the New England Patriots.

New England is a 9-5 favorite in Super Bowl odds to win Super Bowl XLV.

The New England Patriots have had 17 different playoff appearances in their history. All but one of those appearances came in the time while playing in the NFL. Their first playoff appearance came in 1963 in the AFL.

For years the Patriots managed to frequently make the playoffs, but they were never able to go the distance after advancing to the postseason. The 70’s, 80’s and 90’s featured multiple playoff appearances for the Patriots. In all of those decades they only managed to make the Super Bowl two times. Those two appearances were in 1985 and 1996.

The Patriots have turned things around as of late. In the last decade the Patriots have managed to advance to the Super Bowl four times. While advancing to the Super Bowl four times the team was able to win the big game 3 times. The three Super Bowl victories came in 2001, 2003 and 2004.

The Patriots are looking for yet another Super Bowl under the direction of Tom Brady and Bill Belicheck. Another Super Bowl would likely cement this team’s status as a true dynasty in the National Football League. There is probably no team in the NFL with as much playoff experience as the Patriots in the league today.
