Tomlin signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers through 2012
Coach Mike Tomlin has been signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers to a two-year extension with an additional option year.
Because the Steelers‘ policy has been to sign a coach before he begins the final season of a contract, hence the extension was expected. Tomlin’s current contract, averaging $2.5 million annually had an option year and one season remaining.
The extension’s financial terms were not disclosed.
In a statement, Steelers president Art Rooney II said, “Mike Tomlin has proven to be one of the top head coaches in the National Football League in a relatively short time. His unique ability to lead the team and motivate individuals have been key factors in our success over recent years.”
Tomlin, in his second year, led the Steelers to the 2008 Super Bowl title. He was 36 and he became the youngest coach to win it all when Pittsburgh beat Arizona 27-23.
Losing five in a row and missing the playoffs, the Steelers finished 9-7 in 2009 and became the first champion to miss the following postseason.
Following Chuck Noll (1969-91) and Bill Cowher (1992-2006), since 1969, Tomlin is only the Steelers’ third coach.
In the news release Tomlin said, “I have been blessed to have the opportunity to be the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I am excited to have the opportunity to live and work in this great city, and to focus on the true matter at hand, which is winning football games and bringing another Super Bowl title to Pittsburgh.”
Earlier this month, the Post-Gazette had reported that the Steelers and Tomlin had reached agreement on a three-year deal.
