NFL minicamps: Detroit Lions
From April 30 to May 2, several young football players participated in a minicamp for the Detroit Lions. The minicamp was for rookies only. While some players, such as second overall draft pick Ndamukong Suh, will undoubtedly be with the team come the start of the season, most were playing for a spot on the team. Their minicamp for all players is scheduled for June 23 to June 25.
Among the players in attendance at the rookie minicamp were draft picks, signed rookie free agents, and 21 rookie tryout players. The draftees and signed free agents will be allowed to return for offseason workouts on May 17. Coach Jim Schartz said he may invite a few of the tryouts back.
Ndamukong Suh was excited to be back on the field after spending months preparing for the NFL Draft. “I’m happy to be back out there on the field, and that’s really my excitement,” Suh said. “No more combine training, none of those things. It’s back to football.” The defensive tackle appeared to be a worthy first round selection, as he maintained intensity throughout each practice.
The Lions were also pleased with their other first round selection, running back Jahvid Best. The former Cal standout was tough to bring down throughout the three-day camp. He also spent a lot of time lining up at receiver. “You saw him lined up as a wide receiver, you saw him moving around,” said coach Schwartz. “He catches the ball well, he’s got good burst.”
Undrafted rookie free agent corner Aaron Berry turned a few heads with his stellar play on the first day. He intercepted a few passes and was in on a numerous plays during live drills. Unfortunately, he had to sit out the second day as a result of an undisclosed injury.
Berry’s solid play should be of particular interest to cornerback Amari Spievey. He was selected in the third round but his minicamp was derailed by “some tightness in his hip flexors.”
