NFL minicamps: Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons held a minicamp for all players from May 7 to May 9. While it is difficult to glean too much from players competing without pads, reviews have been largely positive with reports that this may be the deepest Falcons roster in a long time.

On Day 1 of the minicamp, a couple rookies got their chance to show their skills. Linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, football betting star, who Atlanta selected in the first round, lined up at strong side linebacker. He would later line up on the weak side. Fifth round selection Kerry Meier was strong while running his routes but had to sit out on Day 3 due to a hamstring injury.

The revamped secondary was also impressive, managing five interceptions on the first day. They are led by newly-acquired cornerback Dunta Robinson. “That’s the type of secondary that we need to be,” Robinson said after their performance. “We need to set the tone when we are lining up against the receivers. We want to move up the charts as a unit and that’s the mindset we have to have going into the season.”

After throwing five interceptions on the first day, quarterback Matt Ryan was sharp on Day 2. He completed 7 of 8 passes during seven-on-seven drills. Other quarterbacks who saw action on Day 2 were Chris Redman, D.J. Shockley, and John Parker Wilson. As a whole, the quarterbacks completed 12 of 16 passes on the day.

The rookies were invited back for a four-day minicamp that started May 17 and went to May 20. It was a great opportunity for the coaches to focus on the basics and fundamentals with the young players.
