NFL minicamps: Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers held minicamp for their rookies from April 30 to May 2. It was an opportunity for the young players, who followed NFL season preview, to get acquainted with NFL football. The players who performed well, along with the draftees and signed free agents, will be invited to the team’s minicamp for all players held from June 21 to June 23.
Several dozen players participated in the rookie orientation camp. The list includes recent draft choices, signed undrafted free agents, players signed to future deals at the end of last season, and 28 players in for tryouts.
The rookies spent a good deal of their time familiarizing themselves with the Packers‘ playbook. “There is a lot of stuff new to me,” said fifth round selection OG Marshall Newhouse. “But there is a lot of stuff that is typical football stuff. It’s just getting the terminology down and getting your head into it and studying it.”
The biggest story of the minicamp had to deal with first round selection LT Bryan Bulaga committing multiple false start penalties on the first day of camp. He committed two of them within five plays and was benched immediately after both. They were the only false starts of the practice. Despite committing the penalties, Green Bay has little doubt the offensive lineman will succeed in the NFL.
Wide receiver Shawn Gore arguably had the most successful minicamp. He is the only one of the 28 tryout players to get a contract offer from the Packers. The athletic receiver ran a 4.5 40-yard dash in a workout and reportedly has a 40-inch vertical jump. At the same time Gore received a contract offer from Detroit, the British Colombia Lions selected him tenth overall in the Canadian Football League Draft.
