NFL mini camps – San Diego Chargers

Towards moving away from the “LT” era, the San Diego Chargers took the first steps. Their former running back looked like he was hitting the end of his career last season, although he has been one of the greatest of all time. Tomlinson will be running for the New York Jets this season instead of the San Diego Chargers for the first time in his career.

The Chargers were lacking many of their players, even though they had a decent minicamp. With contract issues and injuries, several of their receivers were missing. This being the case, the level of competition at their mini camp was very low. With the first team, undrafted rookies, such as Bryan Walters and Seyi Ajirotutu, were playing. They were not especially impressive during the camp.

During mini camp, the rookies received the bulk of instruction and some have shown progress in the short camp. Towards becoming a solid backup to Darren Sproles, Ryan Mathews seemed to make strides. Sproles will be the feature back for the first time in his career.

As Sproles will be the feature back for the first time in his career, Mathews may have the chance to log some carries. For the Chargers, his production will be the key as Tomlinson was still a featured player in the Chargers offense last season.

The Chargers are making strides towards moving past the Tomlinson era and had a solid mini camp. This offseason, many will watch Sproles and see if he steps up into his new role.
