While many NFL teams spent big money on free agents in the off season, the San Diego Chargers decided to help their defense using the 2010 draft. The Chargers traded their 28th and 40th pick to Miami for their 1st round 12th pick for the 2010 NFL draft. In the 2010 NFL Draft, the Chargers picked Fresno State Running Back Ryan Matthews. The franchise hopes that Matthews, who was one of the highest ranking running backs in the draft, can replace the large hole left by Ladainian Thomlinson who was cut during the off season.
The team also aggressively traded with other teams during the draft. They traded their 91st pick, 173rd pick, and next year’s 4th round pick in order to receive pick # 73 in the third round from San Francisco. San Diego used the 73rd pick to draft inside Linebacker Donald Butler from the University of Washington. Other notable defensive draft picks were Safety Darrel Stuckey in the 4th round, and Defensive Tackle Cam Thomas in the 5th round.
The Chargers also signed free agents as well such as Linebacker Tim Dobbins, Tackle Jeromay Clay, and Linebacker Antwan Applewhite. With these new acquisitions, the Chargers look to be a solid defensive power in the 2011 NFL season.
