NFL: Dallas Cowboys Offseason

The Dallas Cowboys had a very busy offseason. After a loss to the Minnesota Vikings in last season’s Conference Finals, they decided to make a few changes to their roster.

In this year’s draft, they picked up wide receiver Dez Bryant from Oklahoma State, 24th overall and with their 27th pick linebacker Sean Lee from Penn State. After the simultaneous releases of long time left tackle Flozell Adams and free safety Ken Hamlin, you would think that picking up a player to fill either one of those positions would be a top priority… it wasn’t. Instead they draft a wide receiver to possibly replace Patrick Crayton.

According to Crayton’s agent, Crayton wants to remain with the Cowboys, but if they don’t feel they need him, then he would like to be traded. The Cowboys felt that they had to beat the receiver hungry Baltimore Ravens to the punch.

The Cowboys lost an opportunity to draft any one of the players to fill the newly vacant tackle and safety positions, hoping that those players would drop down in the draft. Players like tackles Russell Okung and Trent Williams or strong safeties Eric Berry and Earl Thomas, who ultimately found homes elsewhere.

Not sure of his future with the Cowboys, Wade Phillips’ contract was extended through 2011. Phillips’ record is 33-12 since taking over in 2007, with a 1-2 playoff record. He has also led the Cowboys to their second NFC title in three years with their first playoff win since 1996.
