St. Louis Rams 2010 Draft Review

The 2010 NFL Draft for the St. Louis Rams will be defined by the performance of quarterback Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), whom they selected with the first overall pick. Although Ndamukong Suh (DT, Nebraska) is considered to be more of a sure thing, St. Louis, who was 28th in the NFL in passing yards and 29th in passing touchdowns en route to a 1-15 record last season, needed a franchise quarterback to turn things around. Bradford is their best shot.

As the number one overall pick, Bradford will likely land a very lucrative contract. Last year’s number one pick, quarterback Matthew Stafford, received a six year, $78 million dollar contract with $41.7 million in guarantees. It is expected that Bradford’s contract will likely be in this range, if not more.

The Rams used their second round pick on a player who they hope will protect Bradford. Rodger Saffold played offensive tackle for Indiana and was rated by several teams as a first round pick. He will likely begin on the right side of the line, but St. Louis Ram has hopes of moving him to the left eventually to protect Bradford’s blind side.
Jerome Murphy (CB, South Florida), whom they selected in the third round, is a nice add to the Rams’ defense. He is a physical corner who will add much to a defense that finished 29th in total tackles last season.

In rounds 4-7, St. Louis selected a wide receiver (Mardy Gilyard, Cincinnati, 4th round), two tight ends (Michael Hoomanawanui, Illinois, 5th; Fendi Onobun, Houston, 6th), three defensive ends (Hall Davis, Louisiana-Lafayette, 5th; Eugene Sims, West Texas A&M, 6th; George Selvie, South Florida, 7th), another corner back (Marquis Johnson, Alabama, 7th), and a linebacker (Josh Hull, Penn State, 7th).
