NFL: New Orleans Saints Offseason Moves
The Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints are enjoying the benefits of being on top of the NFL heap but if they want to stay there they need to have a successful offseason. So far so good.
The big free agent signee was defensive end Alex Brown, formerly of the Chicago Bears. The Bears cut Brown loose after apparently not being able to trade him and the Saints saw value. Brown will bolster an already good defensive line.
Where the Saints need to fill a hole in the April 22nd draft is in the linebacking corps with the loss of Scott Fujita who signed with the…Cleveland Browns? Multiple mock drafts list linebacker Sean Weatherspoon of the Missouri Tigers as a likely target for the Saints. The Saints first pick in the first round is #31. They also have a second round pick.
A key strategy for the Saints has been to re-sign key role players from last year’s Super Bowl team. Eight players have re-signed. That’s taking care of business and taking care of your own, maintaining continuity with the players who made significant contributions.
An important open decision for New Orleans is whether or not to re-sign free agent safety and perceived leader of the defense Darren Sharper. Sharper had offseason arthroscopic knee surgery and hopes to return to the Saints.
As New Orleans tries to repeat in 2011, one thing is for certain. They are trying to keep the core Super Bowl team together while making appropriate upgrades.
