Kansas City Chiefs 2010 Draft Review
With the 25th ranking in both total runs allowed and passing yards allowed in 2009, the Kansas City Chiefs were eager to draft a player described by many as “the next Ed Reed” in the 2010 NFL Draft. With the fifth overall pick, the Chiefs selected free safety Eric Berry out of Tennessee. The 2009 SEC Defensive Player of the Year was the top-rated defensive back in the draft and is expected to start immediately.
Kansas City used their second round pick on running back Dexter McCluster out of Ole Miss. They drafted him with the intention of having him help out current running back Jamaal Charles with the running workload. By taking him early in the second round, Kansas City surprised many people as most had him as a late second-rounder to third-rounder. He has great speed and pass-catching skills and will be able to potentially return kicks and line up in the slot.
The Chiefs again turned their attention to their secondary in the third round by drafting cornerback Javier Arenas out of Alabama in the third round. The versatile defensive back was second-team All-SEC as both a corner and a return man.
While the Chiefs did a good job of drafting noticeable players, they failed to beef up their weak offensive and defensive lines. In 2009, the Chiefs’ defense was 31st in quarterback sacks and their offensive line allowed 45 sacks (sixth-worst in the league).
With their remaining picks, the Chiefs selected an offensive guard (Jon Asamoah, Illinois, 3rd round), a tight end (Tony Moeaki, Iowa, 3rd), another safety (Kendrick Lewis, Ole Miss, 5th), and an outside linebacker (Cameron Sheffield, Troy, 5th).
