Cleveland Browns 2010 Draft Review

With the 31st ranked defense in the NFL last season, the Cleveland Browns entered the 2010 NFL Draft thinking of ways to improve their defense.  They hope they’ve found an important solution to their problem in Florida cornerback Joe Haden, whom they selected with the seventh overall pick. Cleveland was very weak at corner, and the physical Haden should start immediately for them.

The Browns again sought to improve their defense when they picked again in the second round.  They used their second round pick on Oregon safety TJ Ward.  Many see this pick as a reach, as he was predicted to be a third or fourth-rounder by most experts.

Cleveland had another selection in the second round 21 picks later.  They used it on Tennessee running back Montario Hardesty.  Cleveland traded up to get him and they hope he will add to their rushing game which is arguably the team’s greatest strength.  Last season, they were eighth in the league in total rushing yards.

In the third round, the Browns drafted Texas quarterback Colt McCoy.  The former Heisman trophy runner-up is one of the most well-known names of the draft.  Cleveland fans are excited about his potential.

With their remaining picks, Cleveland selected an offensive guard (Shaun Lauvao, Arizona State, 3rd round), another safety (Larry Asante, Nebraska, 5th), a wide receiver (Carlton Mitchell, South Florida, 6th), and a defensive end (Clifton Geathers, South Carolina, 6th).
